David Ramon Hawkins was an American mystic, physician, psychiatrist, spiritual teacher and author of the ever-popular Power vs. Force who utilizes applied kinesiology for consciousnessresearch. Hawkins received his medical degree from the Marquette University School of Medicine and his doctorate from Columbia Pacific University. Prior to writing books on spirituality, Hawkins practiced orthomolecular psychiatry. He worked as a psychiatrist and headed a large psychiatric practice in the State of New York. In his early career he was a convinced atheist. A long and serious illness / alcohol addiction brought him to the brink of death. He reported that he physically collapsed one day and after a period of unconsciousness, woke up with a changed consciousness and a strong knowledge of the existence of God. From then on he strove for spiritual evolution of consciousness. After the resignation of clinical activity in 1980, living in seclusion Hawkins worked for seven years primarily with spirituality and consciousness. His main concern was the promotion of spirituality in man.
Hawkins' first spiritual book "The levels of consciousness" presents an introduction to his theory of consciousness. Hawkins liked to give the spiritual seeker insight and understanding of the key issues in the search for God at hand. Topics are among others: levels of consciousness and development, structures of the ego, integrity, intelligence, causality and linear thinking, non-duality, properties of God and assistance to problems on the way to God. In the fourth book Truth vs.. Falsehood Hawkins summed up his statements about consciousness strongly together and then lists in great detail various topics of American culture consciousness with values in tables.
Hawkins developed from his own spiritual experiences and kinesiology testing out a "scale of consciousness." On this he arranged things such as people, concepts, books, movies, etc. to values between 1 and 1000. The scale is bounded from below by zero (death/no awareness) and above by the thousands, according to him, the highest achievable level of human consciousness.
Through his book "Power vs. Force" (The levels of consciousness) Hawkins was in spiritual literature. The book has been translated into 15 languages and was in several countries on the bestseller lists. In 2000 in Seoul, the honor of "Tae Ryoung Sun Kak Tosa" award (Great Soul and a leading teacher on the path to enlightenment) was given to Hawkins. Many awards followed, such as The Huxley Award for the "Inestimable Contribution to the Alleviation of Human Suffering," Physicians Recognition Award by the American Medical Association, 50–Year Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association, the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame, and a nomination for the prestigious Templeton Prize that honors progress in Science and Religion. In 1995, in a ceremony officiated by the H.H. Prince Valdemar of Schaumburg–Lippe at the San Anselmo Theological Seminary, he became a knight of the Sovereign Order of the Hospitaliers of St. John of Jerusalem (founded in 1077) in recognition of his contributions to humanity.
